सनातन परम्परा के प्रसार और हिंदू धर्म के प्रचार व प्रसार में आदि शंकराचार्य का महान योगदान है।
उन्होंने सनातन परम्परा को फैलाने के लिए भारत के चारों कोनों में चार शंकराचार्य मठों श्रृंगेरी मठ, गोवर्द्धन मठ, शारदा मठ और ज्योतिर्मठ की स्थापना की थी । शंकराचार्य ने इन चारों मठों के अलावा पूरे देश में बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों की भी स्थापना की थी।
ईसा से पूर्व आठवीं शताब्दी में स्थापित किए गए ये चारों मठ आज भी सनातन परम्परा का प्रचार व प्रसार कर रहे हैं ।आदि शंकराचार्य को अद्वैत परम्परा का प्रवर्तक माना जाता है।

अज्ञान के कारण आत्मा सीमित लगती है, लेकिन जब अज्ञान का अंधेरा मिट जाता है, तब आत्मा के वास्तविक स्वरुप का ज्ञान हो जाता है, जैसे बादलों के हट जाने पर सूर्य दिखाई देने लगता है।
